What are these permits?

Two different jobs: one lets you collect tax, the other lets you avoid paying it on stock you resell.

A sales tax permit is the registration itself. It allows you to legally collect sales tax from your customers in a state and pay it over to that state. Without it, collecting tax is not allowed, and neither is ignoring the obligation once you have one.

Buying inventory tax-free is a separate mechanism. In most states you do it with a resale certificate that you issue to your supplier, referencing your sales tax permit number, so no separate registration exists. A few states, such as Washington, issue an actual reseller permit instead.

Many businesses need both pieces, but not every business does, and in most states the second one comes free with the first. We'll tell you exactly what applies to you.

The two documents, side by side

What each one is for, and which of them your state actually issues.

Sales Tax Permit

The registration. It allows you to legally collect sales tax from your customers and pay it to the state, and it is what your permit number comes from.

Reseller Permit or resale certificate

Lets you buy inventory from US suppliers without paying sales tax on goods you'll resell. In most states this is a certificate you issue yourself using your permit number, not a separate registration.

Do you need them?

A quick honest gut-check before you spend anything.

You probably do if you:

  • Sell physical products in the US
  • Use Amazon FBA or store inventory in US warehouses
  • Sell through Amazon, Shopify, Walmart, eBay, or TikTok Shop
  • Have sales that require registration in a specific state

You may not if you:

  • Only sell services or digital products
  • Only sell through Amazon in states where Amazon collects and remits sales tax for you

If you don't need a permit, we'll tell you. We never recommend services you don't actually need.

Frequently asked questions

I don't live in the US. Can I still get these permits?

Yes. Your business can register regardless of where you live, and most state permits are free to obtain. A few states can add steps. Texas, for example, issues its sales and use tax permit at no cost, but the Comptroller has discretion to ask an applicant for security such as a surety bond in some situations. It isn't a standing rule for non-residents, and we'll tell you if your case is one of them before you apply.

Amazon collects sales tax for me. Do I still need a permit?

Sometimes. It depends on where your inventory is stored and how you sell. FBA stock sitting in a state's warehouse can create obligations marketplace collection doesn't cover. We'll check for you.

Can I buy inventory tax-free?

In many cases, yes, on goods you genuinely intend to resell. In most states you do it by giving your supplier a resale certificate that references your sales tax permit number; a few states issue a separate reseller permit instead. Either way the saving goes straight to your margins, and we set up whichever document your states use.

Do I need to charge US sales tax on international orders?

No. US sales tax generally applies only to products shipped within the United States.
